Beautélanin® · A Note From the Founder

A Specialty Is Not an Exclusion

Why Beautélanin® Exists

Listen

A recorded message from Judith Pluviose

One of the questions I occasionally receive is whether Beautélanin® is only for people with melanin-rich skin. The answer is simple. No. Our brand was never built to exclude anyone. It was built to address what I believe are longstanding gaps in how melanin-rich skin has been researched, taught, represented, and treated. Those are two very different things.

Specialty Means Responsibility

When people hear the word specialty, they sometimes assume it means exclusivity.

To me, it means responsibility.

Beautélanin® was founded because I observed recurring gaps across multiple areas of the skincare industry—not only in education, but also in research, product development, treatment protocols, clinical representation, and public conversation.

These gaps influence how practitioners learn.

They influence which ingredients are studied.

They influence which clinical images appear in textbooks.

They influence which products are formulated.

They influence which treatment protocols become industry standards.

And ultimately, they influence the care clients receive.

When these systems consistently overlook one population, the effects extend far beyond the classroom.

Good Intentions Cannot Replace Information

Many treatment protocols were developed using research and clinical experience that did not always include sufficient representation of melanin-rich skin.

As a result, practitioners sometimes apply procedures without fully understanding how differences in inflammatory response, pigment behavior, barrier resilience, or wound healing may influence outcomes.

The issue is rarely a lack of good intentions.

The issue is often a lack of information.

Specialization helps close that gap.

“Our focus is not built on exclusion. It is built on curiosity, responsibility, and the belief that deeper understanding leads to better care.”

Formulation Should Support the Skin

The same pattern exists in product development.

For decades, many products marketed toward melanin-rich skin focused almost exclusively on correcting pigmentation, lightening discoloration, or creating a more “even” complexion.

Far fewer products were designed around supporting the biological systems that influence long-term skin health—barrier resilience, inflammation, oxidative stress, microbiome balance, and pigment regulation.

At Beautélanin®, we believe formulation should begin with understanding the biology of the skin rather than attempting to change its identity.

We formulate to support the skin—not to fight against it.

Representation Is Part of the Science

Representation extends beyond marketing campaigns.

It includes the photographs chosen for textbooks.

The conditions discussed during professional education.

The populations included in clinical research.

The examples used in classrooms.

The conversations practitioners have with their clients.

When people rarely see themselves reflected in educational materials, they may begin to believe their skin concerns are uncommon—or worse, unimportant.

Every population deserves to be represented not as an exception, but as part of the scientific conversation.

Deeper Study Serves Better Care

Healthcare has always recognized the value of specialization.

Pediatric medicine focuses on children.

Geriatrics focuses on aging.

Sports medicine focuses on athletes.

None of these specialties suggest that everyone else is unwelcome.

They exist because certain populations benefit from deeper study.

Beautélanin® applies that same philosophy to melanin-rich skin.

Our focus is not built on exclusion.

It is built on curiosity, responsibility, and the belief that deeper understanding leads to better care.

Our Specialty Shapes Our Perspective

Although our educational focus centers on melanin-rich skin, our doors are open to everyone.

Healthy skin is not exclusive.

Barrier function matters regardless of complexion.

Inflammation affects every skin tone.

The microbiome belongs to us all.

The principles of careful observation, individualized care, and evidence-informed treatment benefit every client.

Our specialty shapes our perspective. It does not limit our compassion.

A Response to a Broader Pattern

Beautélanin® is not an answer to one missing chapter in skincare education.

It is a response to a broader pattern.

A pattern in which melanin-rich skin has too often received less research, fewer dedicated formulations, fewer clinical images, fewer educational resources, and fewer conversations centered on its unique biology.

Correcting those gaps does not diminish the profession.

It strengthens it.

Because when we improve our understanding of melanin-rich skin, we improve our understanding of skin itself.

“A specialty is not an exclusion. It is a commitment to advancing knowledge where research, treatment, products, and education have historically left unanswered questions.”
