Skin-Typing System
Beautélanin® was not developed as another skin-typing system. It was developed in response to a larger limitation within conventional esthetics education: practitioners are often taught to identify what skin looks like without being given an equally robust framework for considering how it behaves, responds, recovers, and retains the effects of previous exposure and inflammation.
The comparison that follows examines the philosophical and educational distinctions between Beautélanin®, Skin Script, and Dermalogica — two respected professional skincare models used widely in esthetics education.

A Behavior-Based
Reasoning Layer
MRBUP® does not replace anatomy, dermatologic knowledge, contraindication screening, or professional skin analysis. It adds a behavior-based reasoning layer that moves the practitioner from classification toward clinical reasoning within esthetic scope.
Melanin Expression & Density
Observes melanin expression and density without using pigment as a hierarchy of value or assuming darker pigmentation is itself a concern.
Inflammatory & Stimulation Response
Considers how readily the skin responds to inflammatory, mechanical, environmental, or product-related stimulation.
Retention, Tolerance & Recovery
Examines the way the barrier appears to retain moisture, tolerate intervention, recover, and respond to environmental or product stress.
Cumulative Ultraviolet Relationship
Considers the cumulative visible and reported relationship between skin and ultraviolet exposure rather than reducing UV history to whether someone "burns or tans."
Persistence & Recurrence of Pigment
Considers the persistence and recurrence of pigment following inflammation, injury, procedures, friction, or other triggering events.

The Right
Question
Beautélanin® does not define "melanin-safe" as acid-free. That distinction is important. An acid is not automatically unsafe for melanin-rich skin, just as a botanical, enzyme, or "natural" treatment is not automatically safe.
Beautélanin® evaluates exfoliation through:

"Can this ingredient be used on Black skin?"

Conventional professional skincare commonly approaches hyperpigmentation as a concern to improve through exfoliation, pigment-modulating ingredients, sun protection, and other interventions. Beautélanin® adds another layer: pigment is also information.
