The Skin They Forgot to Teach examines how medical, dermatological, and beauty curricula have often treated melanin-rich skin as a deviation from the presumed standard rather than as a biological system deserving of its own depth of study. It examines how whiteness became embedded within clinical references, textbook imagery, treatment protocols, product development, and professional education — and how those standards continue to influence the way Black skin is assessed and treated.
Drawing from her own experiences in esthetics school, Pluviose discusses how hyperpigmentation, inflammation, barrier disruption, and pigment response are frequently misunderstood when practitioners are educated through incomplete or biased frameworks. Skin behaviors that require context and careful observation may instead be labeled as problems, complications, or exceptions.
The book is both a critique of institutional erasure and a call for more complete education. It challenges readers to question the systems they have been taught to accept as neutral while introducing a behavior-based approach to understanding melanin-rich skin.
